Merchant Category Code Retrieval

What is Merchant Category Code (MCC)?

Merchant Category Code (MCC) is a four-digit code used to categorize the types of goods or services provided by merchants, and is a key element in the payment processing flow

The Merchant Category Code (MCC) is established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Payment processors assign MCCs based on factors such as the merchant’s business type and risk level, thereby determining the fee structure

The important application of merchant category coding

Manage bank card payment categories

Utilize MCC to administer the payment categories of bank cards, restricting their usage to specific merchant types or limiting them to certain designated merchant types

For example, a payment category can be set for a travel bank card, restricting its use to MCC merchants related to travel; or high-risk MCC merchant transactions such as gambling can be blocked

Consumer data customer portrait

Each transaction contains MCC data and relevant transaction information, including the amount, authorization method, and merchant using the card, which can assist in collecting detailed consumption data

Cross-border transaction fee

MCC can determine the transaction type and influence the processing method of cross-border transactions, including currency exchange fees and acceptance rules

For transactions involving high-risk cross-border business, there are usually higher fees
